PowerPak / Optical sensor

Guys,

Cheer up a prospective boat owner. Today went on sea trial of a 19 ft McKeecraft with a "well maintained" 1999 Johnson v-6 carburated 150hp model J150pxees , ser # G04657274

Before launch, I learned that the boat had a powerpak failure and was limped home to the marine mechanic with only 3 cyl working.

Powerpak and optical sensor were replaced. Boat was run on ear muffs with no problem.

Today we launched in the intercoastal, motor fired right up and idled smoothly,
motored up the waterway at 3800 - 4200 rpm, no smoke from engine everything was going along fine.

I noticed the GPS had stopped and pointed it out to the mechanic on board conducting the sea test. He slowed down quickly to idle and while he was looking at the GPS for acouple of minutes the engine seemed to load up and get rough. He hit the throttle engine came up quickly ran strong about 30 sec then quit. Restart, idle, throttle, agin about 30 sec then quit. this went on for several more attempts before we anchored to see if letting it cool down would help. Nothing.

Needless to say as the prospective buyer I am alarmed and disappointed as the boat is in pristine conditiona and the right size features etc.

Any idea what might cause such a problem or if I can ever be sure that the motor can be returned to a state of reliability.

Owner instructed mechanic to fix the boat motor at whatever cost.
and we have another sea trial next weekend with the owner, scheduled for the entire day. Am I being foolish and should I just walk away despite my feelings for the boat.

A friend of mine suggesting asking the owner to agree to putting a couple of thousand of the sale price into escrow to handle any non operator induced engine malfunctions for a period of say 90 days from delivery. Does this even sound plausable?

Unfortunately I'm in that price point area where boats are older andthe reliability of engines is suspect. Is it realistic that I can get adecent fishing boat with motor 115 - 150 on a 18 to 20 ft hull in the 10k range.

I got cash if you think yours can pass the muster.

I'd let the owner and mechanic fix it and in the meantime keep looking.
Talk to anyone selling boats with $10K and they'll break out the champagne and strawberry's for you. Its a buyers mkt everywhere.!

Mark, I have one of those motors, and can tell you that they are excellent. If it can befixed, it will be good for you.

You might ask for a compresson test. If all cylinders have even compression and it is 100+PSI, I would let the mechanic fix the motor and give it a good sea trial. If the compression test fails, look elsewhere.

Sorry you had a bad first experience Mark, was hoping after the last time we talked that you would come back saying how much you loved it. Dont get discouraged, that is an excellent motor. Sit back as reccomended and let the mechanic and owner sort it out, dont make any offers until they do. Could be something minor like a restriction in the tank vent or semi closed anti syphon valve.

Im sure the first things that he will do is a spark and compression test, keep us informed on what happens.

Re: PowerPak / Optical sensor

Thanks for the comments.
The short version is I elected to walk away from the motor and the deal. The more research I did, the less attractive the deal seemed and I just couldn't get that nagging feeling that somebody "up there " was trying to tell me something, out of my mind.

The boat repair mechanic who was participating in the sale was miffed but.......I figure it serves him right for not insuring that there would be no hiccups with the sea trial, even if it ment him doing an in water test first.

On the up side, I was put in touch with a clean 2000 Wellcraft fisherman CC in the 18 ft length, complete with all uscg equip, and 2001 Johnson Ocean Pro 150 HP. It sea trialed beautifully, had better electronics and came with 3 1/2 months dry slip storage for 2k less than the McKeecraft.

Also I think the bow flare on the Wellcraft will keep the boat a bit dryer on windy days.

Any comments on a 2001 Ocean Pro 150 hp

Wish me luck,
Mark

While the motors are virtually the same I think you'll like the Wellcraft better. Nothing wrong with the McKee but you started off on a not-so-good note. With a newer motor, better electronics and free parking (for a while) I'd say you did real good. Besides, now your wife has 2 grand to play with. Maybe she'll buy you something for the new ride.

SHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Wife doesn't know we saved two grand. I see trolling motor, fishing gear, charts, and all kinds of goodies for the boat. Her idea of buying a boat gift would be a new keychain. (Hope she didn't hear that) Oooops
