I have a Johnson 70hp model 70ESL74M. The control box (which is Powershift II) that runs this unit is messed up. I have taken it apart, cleaned it, put new grease and insure that the cables are loose. Put it back together, shifts find until I hook it up at the engine. I can shift it a couple of times and then it locks up. I can move it forword but not in reverse. It has me stymied. Now It will not go into the complete neutral position so I can start the engine. Any ideas out there.

Hi M.jake,

First thought that comes to mind is that something wasn't installed properly when you reassembled the box.

Look there first.

Good Luck,
Mike ;)

My thoughts also. I have spent the last two days taking it apart and back together. I would disconnect from the motor and it will work but when I reconnect will not shift from neutral position. Been in ishopmarine.com looking at their diagram and can't find anything that I left out.

M.Jake

Make sure that the trunion is properly inserted in the slot to the front of the box & the trunion cap is in place, otherwise your control cable will float freely inside the box.

Only thing that I can think of at the moment.

Mike

it sounds like the screw that locks the cable to the trunion is loose, without the resistance from the motor it would appear to work just my 2 cents
