powertrim outdrive question

i just recently bought a new 1978 bayliner with an omc outdrive.
i bought it from a person that buys boats repairs them and resells them.
but from what he said is the powertrim is screwed up so the outdrive does not go up and down. and from what he said it would cost about 400 to fix if i did it myself and somewheres around 700 if i took it in to a repair shop.
so anyhow i am kinda trying to find a cheaper way to do this,
so my question is, is there anyway to hook a handcrank or something to it with a couple little locking pins to hold it up and down?and if so how would i go about doing that.
my roomate has about 10 years exp working on cars but not really on boats so i figured i would try asking on here before we just went ahead and tried to do it.

any info would be appreciated.

Re: powertrim outdrive question

I'm happy owner of a83 model, the've changed a little but..... Is it a tilt (prop in and out) or atrim (motor up and down) issue?

well the prop engages in gear so i think that is fine but the outdrive is stuck in the down position and wont go up when i hit the switch from what they said it is the powertrim motor

im not to familiar with boats i just started on that last summer and went through 5 other boats before getting this one (that i like)

The first thing you need to do is locate an OEM service manual for your engine and drive. Right now, you can't even discribe what you have or what it's called.
You have a stringer drive by OMC. They went out of buisness about 10 years ago and don't exist anymore. Trying to fix something you don't understand, without a manual, is just a waste of time until you at least can discribe what you have.
Your particular model may not even have trim, but it does have tilt. Why it doesn't work may be electrical, or mechanical. But without testing and knowing exactly what you have everything is just a WAG (Wild Guess).

Ebay is about your best and only bet for manuals.

Ayuh,.... I'd go for #7,.... Look for a Merc. or Volvo....

Old Merc.s are the Easiest,+ Cheapest to find parts for.......;)

And,...
There's Free factory manuals online...

Re: powertrim outdrive question

i have the manual....
i know i dont understand it cause like i said i am just getting into boating and thats why i was asking on here because thats what these forums are supposed to be for, arent they?
i thought i explained it pretty well when i said the whole outdrive doesnt go up or down when i hit the tilt switch in front.
all i am wanting to do is hook some sort of handwench to it so i can pull it up when its out of the water and towing it around

Re: powertrim outdrive question

the manual that i have is the
clymer
OMC stern drive shop manual
1964-1986

the boat is a
1977 19.07' bayliner
from what the guy said it has a ford 351 in it the only thing he said about the outdrive was the powertrim was out and needed a new trim motor
i figured he knew what he was talking about because he had somewheres around 10 other boats and about 20-30 other outdrives and motors on his property that he fixes up and sells

Ayuh,....
I Don't do OMCs,... Muchless Stringer drives...
But,...
I do know enough about them to know that thing has some sort of quadrant gear or something for Tilting it...
It also has a motor,+ clutches or something...

If you don't Fix it, Right,....
You won't have Any Reverse..... The outdrive will just Fly up into the air,+ Ruin the ball gears doing it....
Maybe somebodyelse has figured out a way to Cob it up,... But I haven't seen it, nor heard about it...
If you want to use a come-a-long to lift it for trailering,... Go for it...

But it still ain't gonna be a Useable Boat, without Reverse...

'ell,... Trade it off for another 1 with your boattrader buddy...

Re: powertrim outdrive question

yeah i had that problem with one of the other boats to where it was flipping up in reverse it was just a little 10hp merc motor on a small boat.

but thats why i was thinking that i could take out the gear and then drill two holes and put locking pins in them one for when it is all the way up and one where it locks all the way down that way i wouldnt have the problem of it flipping up in reverse.
