Pre-Alpha (233) Lower Shift Shaft

Anyone have a breakdown of the procedure to remove the lower shift shaft (not the intermediate shaft) from the lower unit and install a new one? My outdrive is old enough to wear it has the old-style steel shaft which has corroded a bit. I have a leak at the shift shaft as well, so I will be replacing that bushing, too.

I have looked in the Merc manual, and it gives a vague listing of steps for assembling the shift shaft, but there isn't a lot of detail or pictures. I only found one thread which mentioned if it slips out of gear during the procedure I'm screwed?

I have the lower separated and have new SS lower shift shaft, intermediate shaft, water pump kit (upper/lower) etc to try and fix this leak, but am a little unsure that I want to risk having to take the lower unit to a shop if the drive slips out of forward.

Any tips?

Sorry,... I think the manual is quite Clear,+ when I need to open up a drive, it goes to my Drive Guy...

Well in the manual, I didn't find any info regarding whether the drive needed to be in forward gear, or the consequences of it coming out of gear during the operation. Normally opening the drive would cause it to go to the shop, but I'm really just doing an impeller/water pump replacement and the shift shaft bushing. Nothing really complicated like messing with bearings or gears.
