Pre Alpha Lower Unit Lube

I have a 1980 Mercruiser and I changed the impaler today, I need to refill the lower unit. I have looked but I am unable to find any info on what type of lube and how much.

Could someone please tell me what type and how much fluid to use?

Just get the genuine quicksilver available at any marina. It is very easy to fill, you pull the upper plug and lower plug. Then you pump it in thru the bottom until it comes out the top. Screw top plug in, then very fast unscrew the pump hose and thread in your lower plug. You will loose a microscopic bit, but not enough to cause harm.

You cannot fill from the upper hole. It will never reach the lower unit.

Fordiesel69, thanks for the reply. I'm familiar with the how to, just not the what it calls for or the amount.

I have looked at the manuals, it gives the service intervals and it dose say quicksilver. Is quicksilver synthetic?

It dosn't say how much the lower unit holds. On the outboards I have done was less than a quart.

whatever amount it takes to come out the top hole, ususally around 1 1/2 qts.

Thanks Bt Doctur, I will pick up two quarts. I couldn't accurately gauge the amount that drained out.

Get the Merc Hi Performance gear lube. The Merc Premium will work, but the HP is better.
