I bought a boat with a 165 merc and pre alpha outdrive. the outdrive was off the boat, in pieces inside a wet trash bag.

Then I bought a donor boat 140 merc also with a pre alpha outdrive. I wanted it for the drive and trailer. the motor is siezed.

I pulled the drive off the donor boat and turned the shaft and it turned the prop and with a flick of the shift tab it turned it in reverse.

So the question is , should i just bolt on the new outdrive and see if it works hooked up to the original boat? ( yes I will change the oil and impeller if it does work).

The original outdrive ( in the once wet bag ) had a ratio of 1.62:1 ( c stamped on shaft ) As this new one came of a 140 i'm guessing its 1.94:1.

I'm a firm believer of " if it aint broke don't fix it" so i really don't want to mess with the drive if it works, but what effect would that different gear ratio have. Someone told me I could change the pitch of the prop...?

Any advice MUCH appreciated !

Thanks !!

Sounds like you'll need a taller prop, maybe two steps, 4".
