Pre-Alpha shift cable problem - Solved!

Just replaced the upper on a 1980 pre-Alpha drive. Had everything in forward when it was installed to the transom. Went together fine.

Had only neutral and reverse once everything was bolted up. If I take the shift cable loose and push it together it goes into forward fine. Went to adjust it per Merc manual #4, page 4-10:

Step 2 says: "Shift drive into forward gear position by pushing cable end guide toward brass barrel as far as it will go".

When I go to adjust my shift cable per Step 3 (after pushing it together) as shown in the pic I can only get 5.5 inches with the barrel screwed as far back as possible. Where did all my adjustment go? Would this happen if the shift lever between the upper and lower is off 1 notch?

Thanks!

I would go thru the complete adjustment process from the remote control on back.
I find many times that adjustments are "Tinkered with" trying to fix a faulty cable. From there about all you can do is start over and get things completely reset.

That was my plan, Don! :)

According to the manual, the process starts with the engine cable. Step 1 is disconnect, Step 2 is push in, Step 3 is set length.

I can't get past Step 3!!!

can ya loosen the little set screws that lock onto the core wire and slide the cable end guide out further on the core wire?

Are you sure you have the right cable?

You were right about the faulty cable, Don. Found the problem. Outer cable sheath was broken just behind the bellhousing. Former owner had tried to repair it by tying it together with fishing line! Instead of moving the shift lever the last half-inch into forward gear, the cable sheath just spread apart. Replaced the cable, everything works great now.
