for fiberglass, i've used 80 or 100 grit on a handheld orbital sander. like LD said, no shine is the goal. take it easy at first, too much pressure or time on one spot and you'll go right through the gelcoat. just want to remove the shine and scoff the hull. be sure to clean the hull well before painting.
