Pre-Start Warning Alarm

After reading another posters, post it actually made me wonder about something on my boat.

Pre-start on my boat when I turn the key to the "ON" position the alarm will sound, once I crank it over and the boat starts the alarm shuts off immediately.

Is this just a warning to let the operator know they are about to start the boat or to remind them the key is on and the engine is not running?

Or is it something more serious than that, the boat has done this the entire year I have owned it so I hope it's not something else. I don't really think it is but another post made me wonder..

Thanks.

On MY Mercury, that sound at the time you turn the switch on, is NORMAL OPERATION.

Mine beeps when I turn the key on, but it doesn't stay on until I crank it. Think it's just an indicator that the alarm is in fact working.

If it's a carbed engine and not EFI, you will get a steady alarm as long as the key is on and the engine is not running. It's telling you there is no oil pressure. As soon as the oil pressure builds up to ~5 psi, the alarm will stop.
If it comes on again with the engine running you have low oil pressure, high engine temp, or low gear oil in the reservoir.
