I have a Mercruiser 228R installed in a 1984 Sea Ray SRV210. It has 550 hours. I don't know if the engine fuel pump has ever been replaced. Should I replace the pump based only on its age? It is presently working fine and don't want to open a can of worms....

Re: Preemptive Fuel Pump Change

if there is a glass sight bowl on the side of the pump, look for fuel in it

if there is fuel there, replace the pump

if there is a yellow tube from the pump to the carb, look for fuel there, if fuel is present, replace the pump

check the fuel pressure, if it is below factory spec, replace the pump

if there are no leaks, pump pressure is within spec, and the engine runs fine, i see no need to replace the pump
