preferred fenders and tie downs for inflatable?

Is there a preferred method for using fenders i.e. size, orientation, location, attachment points? I've always owned power boats with cleats e.t.c. I recently purchased an Intex Excursion 5 and noticed there are two sets of "holes" along the sides where the grab line goes through and also on the oar locks. I am mostly concerned about nails, splinters, from docks e.t.c. I guess a tie line with end clip would suffice. I am thinking 12 inch fenders would be plenty big enough? oh,,,not to forget...anchor(s).
