Premium vs High performance

I am changing the lower gear oil in my 2002 125hp outboard. The book calls for premium oil but the marina only carried High Performance. They said as long as I was draining the old out I could use the High Performance. They said that it might even run better. That part I wasn't buying but can I switch to High Performance or should I go to another store.

Thanks

Re: Premium vs High performance

I believe you'll find that Merc. Premium is a Dino based oil,+ the High Performance is a Syn. oil,............

Considering that some Syn. oils are in fact somewhat Slipperier than Dino oils,......
They Might be Right.......

Either Way,..... As long as you're Changing it,....
It Doesn't matter Which 1 you use.........

I'm a firm Believer in the Syn. Oils,......
I use Mobil 1, 75W-90,..........
Mainly because it's on the shelf where I do my shopping..........
It just doesn't have the pretty colored dyes used in the Marine versions........

Not a problem upgrading. Would not downgrade. Read the label on the container and pay attention to the words they use to describe what the oil is intended for.

And yes, that's one of my problems with Merc is that they don't tell you when syn is part of the recipe, like the oil processor Pennzoil does for you.
