Having changed my boat from one with a mercruiser inboard to a Mercury 115hp outboard can anyone give me an idiot proof guide on how to prepare for winter. With the mercruiser we just removed 2 tubes which drained the engine and that was it. I have never worked with an outboard before so any tips more than welcome.

Re: preparing for winter

Assuming 2 stroke.

Proceedure a little different fer 4 stroke.

I run the fuel out of the carbs by pullin' the gas line off while the engine is running, (every time I leave any of my many outboards sit unused fer more then a few days of non use).

Not sure all would agree, but I have had very good luck not rebuilding carbs.

On the last use of the year I fog the engine when I remove the fuel line while the engine is runningby squirting or spraying from a can fogging oil into each carb to the point the engine stalls and then change to the other carbs and make sure the engine gets a good fogging in all cylinders.

I then spray under the hood with CRC or some similar anti corosion spray, (WD-40 werks).

Drain and change the lower unit gear oil, (if it has water it will feeze and break the case).

Store the engine upright so water can drain from the engine.

Hope that helps. JR

Sorry left out it was a 2 stroke. Thanks for the help. I will print this off and make a start tomorrow.
