Pressure release for thermostat..97 40hp

I was told ..more like mummbled to by a dealer (guess you have to spend more then $10) something to the affect of a pressure release for the thermostat. Waiting for my repair manual. Looks like a sort of housing on the base of the power head under the starter. Seems like that where the water is coming in. Have to pull the starter to get a better look

Old three and four cylinder Chrysler engines had a pressure relief valve below the terminal board at the dogleg of the exhaust cover. Later on, Force stopped using them but that's why there is still ahole in the casting there.

Some Force engines used a pressure spring to hold the thermostat onto the rubber seat. Given enough pressuer behind the thermostat, this could open.

I will be working on a 40 this Sunday and will take a look then. Perhaps a similar valve to the larger engines is what your 40 has. If it is leaking into the engine compartment, a simple gasket may fix it.

And yeah, most dealers really don't want to help.
