Hi Guys, I have a fuel tank for a 10 hp 1959 Evinrude, I can't get the primer pump on the tank to work. I installed a new diaphragm and cleaned all the passage ways. I removed the foot valve, when I shake it I can hear the valve clicking so I assume it's working too. I filled the tank 1/4 full but still can't get it to pump a single drop. FRUSTRATED!!
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated...

more gas in tank. take the fuel hose fitting off the fuel side, of the motor connector, then pump, with your finger just slight pressure on the end of the hose.

Do you have the correct diaphram? There are two type's. One has a hole for the metal plunger. The plastic plunger does not have this hole. Take the pick-up stem off. You should be able to suck through it, but not blow through it.

Tashasdaddy, I'll add more fuel tomorrow and remove the fuel line and pump like you suggest. I'll let you know what happens.

R.Johnson, The diaphragm is identical to the one that came off so it should be good. I can suck thru the fuel line but can't bolw thru.

Any other ideas would be appreciated...

The pickup tube that goes to the bottom of the tank has a check valve in it. I'll bet that its stuck. Take the tank top off and unscrew the pickup tube. When you shake it up and down you should hear a rattle. If not, try soaking it in acetone, and lightly tap it till the ball inside works free. If you can't hear a rattle, the tank will never work.

Did you check the other check valve that I mentioned in the PM? They often get lost.

F_R, I didn't see anything in the pm about a valve. If I can't get the pump on the tank to work can I install a inline ballon type pump, ( not sure thats what they call them )...

Thanks again to all you guys that have taken the time to reply to my problem...

When you remove the pump plate from the bottom of the tank cover, there is a flat disc about 3/8" diameter laying in a pocket in there. It just falls out and if you aren't careful, you can lose it. That is the outlet check valve for the primer pump and it won't work at all without it.

No, it is the #19 disc valve.
