I have just bought a 23 Carribean fitted with the above engine coupled to a Mercruiser Leg.
It runs fine up to 1500rpm then starts to miss and run poorly, although I can get it up to 2500rpm with lots of vibration.
I have discovered that the disributor cap is aftermarket and had a plastic casting in the roof of it that was fouling with the rotor contact, which was the elevated "tin" type.
It is a prestolite IBM 7005 distibutor, and I got a new cap Quicksilver( 392-6318T ) and rotor ( 392-6326T ).
I haven't fitted them yet because when I put the rotor inside the cap, it appears that the air gap between the outer rotor contact and the contacts around the cap is too big.
I am wondering if there is a maximum gap between those contacts.
Also, the distibutor cap has a sprung carbon button, and the rotor has a sprung "tin" type cetre contact. Is it normal for both to be sprung, as I would have thought it would only be one that would be sprung?
Thanks for your help.
john Dudley

Hi John,

I've got the same distributor in my 302w. The button contact is sprung and the cap centre contact is fixed. I think you have the wrong cap.

By the way, Carribean 23ft - Nice.

Aldo

Aldo, thanks for your reply. Can you also tell me if your cap is screw down type or clip type. Mine is the clip type.
It will be a heap nicer when I get out on it!
Thanks again
John Dudley

Hi John,

Sounds to me like someone has put an automotive dissy in. Marine dissy caps should only be screwed.

Chris................
(South Lake, where are you?)

Hi Chris,
I'm in Fremantle. Close to the water but not on it yet.
Have you got one of these distributors?

john Dudley

John,

I'm guessing your boat is early 80's. Back then it wasn't unusual to find auto distributors (in Australia) in marine engines. Mine is identical to yours.

I've looked for a marine dissy for a year or so now with no luck, maybe Chris can help both of us.

Aldo
