Is there a price guide for boats like a used car guide?

How do you know if the price is right or does the market drive the prices.

Cheers Paul.

Yep, go to the same place for cars and select boats,

NADAGUIDES Boats is on the top row in the middle

There's really no guide...at least not one that's accurate. In most boats over a few years old, condition is more important than years? When I prepare a CMA (Comparative Market Analysis) for prospective sellers/buyers it's based in actually, recent sales.

For me it's all about cruising other "For Sale" websites (marine ones are out there, you just have to look) finding out what others are asking as "basis" for value, not the top nor bottom. Using similar sized/equipped boats to establish an idea is about as accurate as one can get on older boats?

NADA is useless, as they treat the values like cars, using mileages and model year...on boat, there's no mileage, some have hour meters, which still makes it tough? (see first statement above)

Obviously the more expensive the boat when new, typically the more expensive when used (with exceptions). Asking on the forums here is another great sounding board for values...Again, condition means a lot!

Only thing, NADA is pretty much useless for boats. Around here it's not even a decent guide to get a ballpark figure. Pricing is regional. Look at your local C/L, want-ads etc....

I have heard of a better guide on this forum, just couldn't tell you what it is........

I agree that NADA is off more then on, but this is what the State uses for tax assessments, and is an easy ball park to get an idea. If there is something better other then spending hours looking through classifieds I'm all ears.

It really depends on where you are shopping and what source you are shopping with.

NADA, Craigslist, Ebay, and the other for sale publications on line...... geographic area is the big thing.

Just remember the advertised asking price versus the settled upon price.

Here in VT I have seen some drastic price drops on boats and motorcycles....... just be sure to check out whatever you are buying (look out for the obsolete motors and outdrives ;)) If you are selling wait for a time closer to the prime season.

Problem is if you have to get a bank loan to buy that super nice cared for boat. They go by NADA for the loan, it could be way off from the actual value of the boat.

NADA said my last boat was worth -$650 (yes, negative). I sold it for $1800 & probably could have gotten significantly more if I wanted to put more effort into the sale.

In other words, NADA wasn't very accurate. That said it was a very old boat. NADA got my new boat pretty much correct.

Re: Prices of boats.... is there a guide

At the time I sold my Baja I referenced the NADA guide...$1,000.00 with another $800 for motor...I sold in less than a week for $4,400.00. So based on my experience, NADA might be accurate for the first 5 or so years, after that condition and similar sales means a whole lot more!

Many dealers use ABOS but it's expensive and probably not worth it for a one-time use. I just got on the interwebz and typed in the boat particulars to see what others were asking.

NADA is a joke..... except for a few special cases where they're right

For the most part NADA is useless. I think one of the problems is that they have no access to actual sales price data in a lot of cases.

And like the broken clock that's right twice a day even NADA manages to come close every once in a while.

Many dealers use ABOS but it's expensive and probably not worth it for a one-time use.

They charge $10 for a single lookup, might well be worth it. $200 for unlimited lookups seems a bit steep unless you're a dealer.
