i was looking at a parts book and saw that what i thought was a choke is in fact a manual primer. what up with that? is it actually a primer or choke? confused. p.s., this is my first johnson outboard. former merc owner, sorry.

sorry about that. model number j45rslz. now i've had arguements about the year of this model. the dealer here in town is telling me that there was no 45 commercial in 1985. the bombardier parts site doesn't even list it. but i've got a parts manual with this model number and the year is 1985. (scratching head)

okay, so now that we have determined the year of my motor, and we seem to think that this is a primer, what is the proper way to use it. all i've been doing, when the motor is cold, is squeeze the gas line ball once or twice then pull this primer/choke thingy out and start my motor. it usually starts right off. then i let it warm up a bit, then push this primer/choke thingy in. is this right?

You got it tallcanadian. The primer allows fuel to bypass the carburetors and flow into the intake chamber, unlike a choke which produces rich cold startup by limiting the air in the mix.
