Is it necessary to prime a new oil pump in a 1987 2.5L OMC. There is no mention of priming after replacement in the service manual. However priming is all over the web.

did you pre-fill the pump with oil prior to installation?

if so, then no

if not, then yes

did you rebuild the motor? if not, why would you replace the oil pump?

I had the engine out of the boat to replace transom. The engine had low oil pressure prior to the work. So I thought it would be a good time to replace it. The engines compression was in spec. So no rebuild.

most likely your bearing tolerance is the issue. changing pump wont fix that.

as long as you had 10 psi per 1000 RPM, you are good on oil pressure.
