every time, like clockwork i prime my bulb till it gets hard just before launching the boat.

I turn the key, the motor starts then dies.. then I have to crank it again for a solid 10 seconds straight before it will start.. then it runs fine...

am i over priming it?

EDIT: read the first line back to myself and started cracking up.

Re: priming.

Teh bulb does not prime the engine. All it does is ensure the bowls in your carbs are full.

Depending on your motor you will have either a primer (squirts some fuel into the intake) or a choke (closes off the throat of the carb to create a vacuum for the carb circuits so fuel will be sucked into the intake).

When I start my motor, I raise the high idle lever and give a bit of choke (pushing in the key) while trying to start it.

The issue you are having depends on your motor and the way you are starting it. My guess is that if you gave it some choke it would pop off sooner.

Post the type of motor you have and the steps you are following to start your motor..
