Going on an 18hp Evinrude. Are there any advantages of going with the heavier brass or bronze props over the aluminum. I do know that the bronze or brass props would withstand salt water better, but over and above that, if a man could buy either at the same price, which would be better? I'm fresh water only ..
Thanks!!!

Mark--Here's just one point of view: aluminum, as a soft metal, bends, breaks and dents at a far lesser impact than the harder metals. If bronze or brass is harder than your engine's internal components, and you hit something, which metal will break first? Props are cheaper than overhauls. Maybe some of our engine physics experts can give you a more technical answer.

Hi Mark
I'm going to agree with 7.5(Fleetwin!!)Runner. Unless you're making an all show, not much go motor, go with the aluminum. The brass ones look great on the wall, or even sitting on the trailer, but they are quite hard on the motor. When you're shifting gears you're putting more stress on the clutch dog and gears as they try to engage that extra mass on the propshaft. The brass ones are usually a little faster for a given pitch, as their blades are generally thinner (less drag), but for everyday use, go with aluminum...
- Scott

Sounds like darn good feedback!! I guess that I won't feel so bad when I chip up the aluminum prop, as I know that potentially it is saving my lower unit drivetrain from excess wear or even breakage... Thanks
