What kind of radio is this? Could be any of a number of problems. Too many possibilities to go into without knowing the radio model and year if you know it.

I did a search and found out that the antenna wire needs to be at least 3 feet.mine is barely half that.the braided is the "recieve" the center is the "transmit".gonna find out tomorrow......Thanks

Tony
Both the braid and the inter are used for transmit and receive. Coax is an unbalanced line where the braid is a sheild and ground and the inter carrys most of the signal both transmit and receive. The length of the coax should not affect your receive. Having less coax than 1/2 wave length can affect your transmit some if your antenna is not a real good match.

Can be many things. To start need a lot more info. First thing I would do is open the squelch up until you here static. Also unplug your coax and see if the connector is clean. Put it back in and tighten. Then see can here someone on the same channel.

Are you trying to receive in a scanning mode and if so does it stop scanning when some one is talking? Is problem with a certain channel or all channels? What radio do you have?
