probably a dumb question?

When turning over my engine with plugs out should I be grounding the plug wires to the block. And if so should I also disconnect fuel supply to the carbs in case an errant spark ignites fuel coming from plug holes?

If you have a safety lanyard kill switch, pull it. This should kill all spark to the plug wires. I'm assuming your testing compression. You shouldn't see any fuel coming out of the plug holes. What is your year and model number? Might be useful for others here to be of more assistance.

It is not a dumb question at all. I once nearly set myself and/or the shop afire that way. Flame came shooting out the plug holes about 10 feet.
Disconnecting the fuel line won't help. The carbs still have fuel in them. But you should ground the plug wires!! Having said that, I don't know if that will interfere with the static timing procedure. I do the timing by another method.
