Probably a stupid question

I have a water pump question. I hav ebeen asking a ton of questions and I appreciate the help and the patience. I jumped into this boat thing head forst and am not to educated on boats.

So my 1972 caravelle with a mercruiser stern drive 215hp (ford 302) has how many water pumps? It has the circulating pump the front of the engine and a belt driven one that feeds water to the cooling system I.E. the circulating water pump. What does the impeller in the lower unit do? It may sound ignorant, but I have no idea. I know that my water inlet for the cooling system is on the back of the boat and I have an adapter to hook to my garden house. This leads directly to the belt driven pump right?

Re: Probably a stupid question

You are correct, you have 2 pumps. One is the circulating pump on front of engine, and the other mounted on bracket and belt drive is the raw water pump. This sucks water from outdrive to circulating pump. You have either a 215e or 215h, the E is electric shift and the h is hyd. shift. Get a factory manual if you can on these as parts are few and scarce. :(

So I do not have an impellar in my drive. I have on on the engine. I do have a manual but I am posted a remote location for the military and cant get to it. I just so rebuild kits on a few websites for impellar kits that were built into the drive.

This is a piggyback question. Since I have a 215e drive what alignment tool do I use? Model number 18-4442 (one thats just a shaft)or 91-805475A 1 (one with the plate)?

Re: Probably a stupid question

Barry, I would STRONGLY suggest you go up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of this forum and go to the Merc manuals link and download the OEM service manual #1. It has all the information about the 215E in it.
There is no raw water pump in it, and personally I have never seen one, and neither has Fazt, so you might as well get to reading and understand what you have.
The manual is just over 1 GB in size, if you can't download it, find a used or buy a new paper manual, but you must have one if you plan on working on that setup.

Re: Probably a stupid question

I have the correct manual, but it only covers sections 1-5. The drive system is covered under section 6 in book two. The pdf file for manual number one only says its 700K or so. I assume the file is damaged. I do know that I need a different alignment tool and that I don't need the clutch alignment tool unless the electronic hift is engaged while drive is off. I think I can probably remove it without activating the clutch. If anyone has a full copy of the manual I could get that would be great. I have cable so I can get it fairly quickly.

Well, it looks like Merc has changed that link from a single download to where you can download only the sections you want.
When you open the link, on the index on the LEFT side of the page, just click on the section you want, in your case section 6C. that section alone will download, then save to your computer and move to the next section you want to download.

Ayuh,....

You've sure got yourself an Odd Ball there Barry,....

I'd be downloading that manual,+ then burning it onto a Disc,....
It sounds like you're gonna really Need it,...
Don says he's Never seen 1,..
Myself,... I've only seen references to it in Parts books,...
Never even bothered to prose through the Manual, studying it,...
Never had Reason too...

Before you spend as much as a Dime on it,..
It might be worth pondering the thought of Up-dating the hull to a more Common, Newer, Driveline....
You're going to be finding Alot of NLAs when you go Parts Shopping.....

Re: Probably a stupid question

I took the time to save every section and print out the ones I need. The drive is in pretty good shape. My father inlaw who is very mechanically inclined and a multiple boat owner did tons of work to it before giving it to me. The drive should be good to go. I just needed information in regards to what tools I need and what to do to replace the engine. I should just need to pull the drive and engine. The drive should only need a gear oil change. If it ever critically fails I will update. The whole boat should of been turn key, but when traveling I got hit by a suprise winter storm and the temp went from 45 or so to -8 and most likely destroyed my engine along with an exhaust manifold.
