Fixed the armature plate wiggle as per Joe Reeves instructions. Motor runs like a charm now. Before in the test tank could only get 3000 +- rpm. Now I can get over 5000. I let off when I hit 5000 in the tank.

Question now is what is the rpm operating range for this motor? It is a 1974 25 hp Johnson.

Thanks to Paul Moir for directing me to Joe's fix. Saved me considerable time and dollars.

From what I've read on other posts, you are not suppose to go too high on the RPM's unless the engine has a load. Less than 3000 if I remember correctly.

Only open her up on the water. I'm not sure for that model but I think most outboards are around 5500 RPMs at WOT.

Thanks.

I never held it there for more than a sec but realize it wasn't the greatest idea but kind of got excited because it has been a thorn in my side for awhile now.

I do appreciate the words of advice and will heed them.
