Yes it is underpowered. What is it rated for? I believe the formula is at least 70% of the max rating. So if it was rated for 100 you would not want to go to much below a 70Hp.I would not waste my money on another prop, you are asking a lot from a 6hp....15-30 hp on the Gulf would be more to my personal liking.

Re: problem here help

If it was a tinny, it MIGHT get up on plane. Being it is a glass boat...no chance. Probably will need a 15.

Re: problem here help

a 12' boat is a one or two person in-shore calm water boat. with a 6 it is a slow boat, but it will do inthe right circumstances. be sure you have oars or if not, paddles.
changing the transom height or prop is a waste of time and money.
If you put a 15 on it, it will still be a 12' boat, too small for open water. With the 15 you may be tempted to head out on a calm morning, only to find yourself in real trouble with the slightest increase in wind. Plus you will probably switch from a 3 gallon to a 6 gallon gas tank, adding weight.
your 6 is perfect for your 10' boat, but for the same reason you don't want to take that out, the 12 is basically the same.

I wouldn't mess with it. Yeah a 6 won't plane but it will still push you around just fine. We have a 14' tinnie with only a 4HP on it. Even with three adults we can cover a lot of area in it every outing. Just enjoy the scenery :D

Re: problem here help

I'm with ez - what you've got there is a nice boat for 2 people and gear, good for poking along at a brisk trot in sheltered water even if it isn't at a trued out plane. The other thing about little motors is they can be pretty grating on the ears at WOT. You might find 3/4 throttle easier to live with for extended periods of time.

Sure you could double your horsepower for a significant bump in speed but I would still not use it in anything but sheltered waters.

Yes, the motor is too small for the setup. You are asking that question,
so you probably are thinking on that, and wondering how to improve upon
it a little bit to make things better(faster).

I've been through it, your pic brought back memories of how I wanted to
make that setup work better. It just didn't get better until I got a 10hp.
But then I realized I could have really used a 15hp or 20hp.

Affordability and other things enter into the situation. Sometimes we have
to make do with what we got, at least for awhile.

Good luck, and Enjoy!
