problem in reverse

Hello I have a j200hp tx eoc when I put it in reverse at the dock.(tied up) and let it idle it thumps, sneezes or backfires, not sure which one. It does this every once in a while. Other wise it runs great I am able to achieve top wot any idea's would be appreciated. thanks toghog

does it only so this once, or repetative times. if i'm not mistaken, the motor has a shift cutout switch, that kills one bank of cylinders when shifting, to make it easier to shift, this may be out of adjustment.

Yes it will keep on thumping every few seconds or so. But only in reverse.

It also stalls when shifting from fwd to neutral.

If I shift from fwd to reverse it will keep running.

other than that it runs like a champ 5800 rpm and smooth, tnx
