Thanks to all....

Re: Problem on cold start?????

It sounds like your carb mixtures are not correct. This can come from incorrect rigging of the throttle valves, improperly set needle valves or buildup in the carb and passeges.

I suggest that you 1) check your carb linkage to see if it is properly adjusted, 2) perform the procedure for DeCarb ( I believe there is a sticky on it) and 3) if the first two didn't help, rebuild the carbs.

Ok sounds good.is there a specific length for the car linkage how would I know?do I have to run it and test it at the same time?
I'm gonna look into decarb also I never did it yet.just got the boat last summer.
If anything else comes to mind please let me know..
Thanks

I recommend that you get a manual as you will need it. There are several available on ebay and at boat stores. The Sel Loc manual will get you by but there are better ones out there.

You will need the manual to do the setups. It would take me too long to explain it here.

Re: Problem on cold start?????

Did anyone ever show you the correct cold starting procedure? You need to pull out the handle about 1/4 inch OR push the center button in while pushing the control handle as far forward as it will go. This disables the shift and allows the engine to warm-up at about 1500 RPM. After it warms-up for a few seconds or so, it can then be pulled back to neutral without stalling.

Remember to push in the key while starting, to choke the engine when cold.

As for warm starts, this will also happen if the idle speed is set too low. Idle speed should be about 700-750 RPM in forward gear, in the water; about 900 or so in neutral.

Unless you know what you are doing, PLEASE do not mess with the low speed mixture adjusting screws.

ok so when doing a cold start I will turn key and do the choke and then push the button in to disable the gear and push it forward to rev the engine for 10-20 sec or so(what do you recommend)to 1500rpm and then put it back in neutral.doing this on cold start won't damage engine?

I'm also gonna look into doing the decarb.

Any more info would be great.

I already got a manual.

Re: Problem on cold start?????

If your linkage is set up correctly, when you advance the power lever in neutral, it gives you about 1500 RPM. This will not hurt a two stroke engine as the oil is part of the mixture and is flowing through to the bearings as a function of design.

After you do this for a few minutes, you should be able to return the trottle to neutral and the engine should idle at 850-900 rpm. If it shuts down at this point, you could have mis adjusted linkage or mis adjusted low speed idle screws.

Without knowing the history of the engine, I can only give possiblities. If you let it sit for a long time without draining the fuel, you could have varnished up carbs which can give you idle problems.

Re: Problem on cold start?????

First you push the button, hold it, and set the control lever as far as it will go. Two hand operation. Then you start the engine with the ignition key. Let it warm a bit then pull it back to neutral. When you push the center button, hold it, and advance the throttle lever, there is a stop which limits RPM to a speed which will not hurt the engine, yet is high enough to prevent it from stalling until it is warmed-up.

Push key and hold in while cranking to choke on cold start. Choke releases when you stop pushing.--Not necessary to choke engine when warm.

Re: Problem on cold start?????

I posted a similar question a couple of weeks ago. Cleaned the carbs with carb cleaner...no more cold start blues.
