problem pulling aq290 dp drive

downloaded the manual, grabbed tools, and a few cans of beer. drove up to storage with the intent to listen to part of the packer game and remove the outdrive.

pulled the lock fasteners for the steering pin in the helmet, no problem. used two 10.9 M6 fasteners to try to jack out the pin and it wont budge. used plenty of PB Blaster, drank a beer, tried again. not budging.

Have the two transom shield pins and the steering pin to pull and thats it. Will be making a puller for the transom shield pins as they are not simply falling out. I can tap them inward a bit so they will come out.

for those that have been there, done that, what is the key to pulling the steering pin. so far, jacking with two M6 fasteners isnt working. I would hate to drag it to a marina for something that I can do.

First, why are you pulling the whole outdrive? Unless you are replacing it, or removing the transom shield, there is no reason to remove the complete drive...... Plus, it's a PITA.

Those jack screws are 1/4-20, not metric.

I am pulling the engine, so the drive needs to come off. the transom shield can stay behind. However the manual that I downloaded lists the threads as M6. I would assume its metric since the other fasteners were metric. I will double check again.

They are SAE and you only need to pull the upper gear box to remove the engine. Look up in the stickies under Volvo info. The manual doesn't give short cuts.

Don, the 1/4-20's didnt thread in the holes more than 1/2 turn. where the M6's threaded in fully.

Any suggestions? the sticky for pulling the upper gearbox also needs to have the steering pin removed.

on a side note, the puller I made for the transom shield pins works great. I only pulled the pins part way until I get the steering pin removed

can the drive be removed without the steering pin being removed?

Nope, it has to come off.

Clean out the holes and threads real good with an o-ring pick.
Grind a slight chamfer on the ends of the bolts.
Grease the threads and try again.
With both bolts screwed in and than backed off ? turn, use a pry bar to try and rotate the steering pin to loosen it.
Use heat.

ditto muc. use heat on the pin. the pin will transfer some heat to the aliminum collar.

use grade 8 1/4" NC, not SAE bolts on the helmet pin. grease threds first.

agree with Don.. no need to remove the whole drive. just the transmission. waist of time if yuo do.
but if you do remove the suspension fork pins use heat..you need to expand the aluminum to get these pins out safely.
the pins are soft so dont punch them with steel..use brass

If the Flywheel Cover clamping ring tap bolts will not remove easily, I'd first separate the engine from the Flywheel Cover, and remove the engine .... or at least slide it forward or sideways enough to give yourself working room.
This opens up the front area of the F/C so that heat can applied to the six tap bolt aluminum bosses.
These bosses house the thread inserts for the tap bolts.
Heat these bosses up and expand things some.
Now you can try to remove the six tap bolts with less risk of breaking any of them.

armed myself with a set of drill bits, a bottoming tap and a tool I made to turn the pin (similar to the tool for turning a rear caliper)

the pin will come out, in whole or in pieces.

the drive will be coming out to take care of the play in the steering helmet and to paint the drive. the motor will be coming out for some bilge cleaning and to work on some performance upgrades.

once I got the pin to rotate using the tool I built, I was able to use a modified vise grip (with a long bolt and slide weight) to get the pin out. the two holes have debris compressed solid in them. the one also now has a bolt broken off in it. will address that tomorrow.

transom pin puller worked great.

Drive is off.

next working on finding a location to pull the engine.
