Hi, I have a '78 Chris Craft, Catalina Express 29ft. and I am in the process of re-doing the wood trim. There is a panel on the side of the helm area about 3x2ft, I removed all the screws but it looks like it has a type of caulking (very thin) under it too, between the wood and the fiberglas. How can I remove the wood without any damage or should I just re-do it right in place??
I tried prying, but it didn't move, so this will only damage the wood. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ;)

PopeyeFoghorn...Popeye has been my nickname around here for years.
You might find a small flexible putty knife and force under the wood, you might need to sharpen it...a sharp knife might help...it could be a tedious job, but you should be able to get it. If you can get it started just pry and cut. Cleaning of the old caulking could be another tedious job...good luck and don't be a cuttin' yerself...just a Thought

That piece of panel was installed with boat
life you will split the wood trying to remove
it if it is badly disclored you can bleach
it and start over, or else plan on replaceing
it.

Play Safe
Phil

How are you Ian?

Same boat...same problem. The pieces you refer to are glued in at the factory I think. I got mine off with minimal damage, just a little splintering on the backside that is covered when you replace the piece. It is far easier to refinish off the boat.

Be aware that in order to take off the starboard panel you have to remove the controls first...there is a set screw on the bottom of the handle...allen wrench:)

Going to try and get up and do a little work on mine today after church.

If you can pick up a length of stranded steel leader material a couple of feet long you can wrap/tie each end to about a 4" bolt to use as handels and then use the wire as a saw behind the wood. You pull back and forth on each "handel" and let the wire saw through the sealer. Its a method that works most of the time and doesn't cost much of anything to try.

Thom
