problem removing prop shaft

Im tearing apart an LU from a johnson 175HP (year unknown). The power head is black, but the entire bottom (exhaust housing, LU, etc..) is repainted white, but used to be green. There are no numbers anywhere on the transom mount, so I am clueless to the year of the LU.

Anyway, I have removed everything execpt the prop shaft and forward gear. Drive shaft, pinion gear, etc.. are out. The manual says to shift the rod into reverse (all the way down) and remove rod. Then slide out prop shaft and forward gear.

This is where the problem is. The prop shaft slides out a little, but stops like its still locked in. Also, when it mentions removing the shifting rod, does it mean to unscrew it? or am I missing something.

FYI, the upper driveshaft had a slight bend in it, and the pinion gear is in 2 peices !@#$!! It also chewed up the forward gear a little, and put some burrs on the reverse gear. Could the forward gear be jammed in there from the failure, or do they sometimes stick when you try to remove them.

This is a co-workers outboard, and Im not sure what he is going to want to do when he sees the damage. Can the driveshafts be straightened, or should he just buy a new driveshaft assembly, and gear set. He doesnt have much money to spend, so he would probably consider buying some good used parts if possible.
Is there any way to find out what gears or driveshafts to look for on ebay or other sites. Do all the V6 outboards share the same gear sets, and driveshafts?
This guy is down on his luck, and Im trying to save him some money, but I still want to do it right.
Thanks for any help

You have to make sure the shifter is fully in reverse before unscrewing the shift rod and then the propshaft assembly should come out with a few yanks. Give the propshaft a twist as you shift to ensure full engagement.

If the nose of the gearcase has sustained significant impact damage, that may warp the housing up there and make it difficult. If it's too stubborn, you can slide the prop back on the shaft (minus the thrust and spline washers) to use as a slide hammer. The nut acts as the stop. Or you can slide a couple of wrenches between the housing and prop. That makes a simple puller and all you do is tighten the propnut which will in turn pull the assembly out a bit.

Push down on the shiftshaft so the clutch dog moves away from the forward gear. Then remove the shiftshaft by unscrewing in a counterclockwise motion. Next slide out the driveshaft and forward gear assy.

Thanks for the info. I gave it another shot, and it popped out. Just stuck a little I guess. Now the fun part begins.
