I havent run my engine in a few years so I cleaned out the carbs and got new gas and oil and went to the lake, I could get it to idle, but any time I would give it gas, it would stall. I tried plugs, I had two different kinds, but that did not seem to work, then I made sure I had gas at both carbs coming in and I did. So I have spark and gas but it will not take any throttle or it dies, thanks for any help JonnyB

Welcome JonnyB!

Let's talk a little about the carb cleaning.

Did you soak them out or take choke and carb cleaner in a can and spray out all passages and follow up with compressed air? Did you install new carb kits?

Check that the throttle plates are opening when the throttle is advanced and that the choke plates are not sticking closed. Your engine does have a manual choke knob so be sure it's set at the right place and the auto choke is working properly.

Check the fuel tank is venting.

Lets' start there. Keep in touch.

I did take the carbs all the way off and did spray out everything. I took the float pins out and made sure they were clean, I did not put new gaskets on the carbs but I do not see why that would make this problem. I can get the motor to run at high rpms without a load, but under a load it can not get going, usually dies. I have the new recommeneded spark plugs, I am almost 100 % sure my gas tank vents, I have new fuel lines and the motor has never given me any problems before. It coughs and sputters alot too. I did make sure the throttle plates are operating too. Any other thoughts would really help.

Jon....if your sure about spark....let me ask what might appear as an unusual question. What color is the float bowl gasket?

As I remember it is a dark greyish black color, and I do have spark, at least if I pull out a plug and hold it to ground and crank it.

Jon, that might be still original equipment in the carbs. The old style gasket material don't like the new formulated fuel we use and has a tendency to get hard and chip off....usually in the bowl. I really would consider getting new OEM kits and do the carb job again.

Would that make it do the sputtering? I can, should I replace the float pins, and everything or is that just wasting my money? Is there any other ajustments on that carb other than idle speed? Thanks for your help! What about the little fuel pump? Could he be a problem?

One other question is, for that motor what is the best oil to fuel ratio? I have had people tell me all different kinds of things. I mostly see 50:1 on what I read, I usualy put closer to 32:1, Thanks

The carb kits have a new float, needle and seat and all that stuff. Did you check the float level? With the float and needle in place and the carb body inverted, the float should set level with the bowl gasket surface.

OK...let's talk about the fuel pump and an easy way to check it out. Remove the fuel inlet cover and the outlet fuel line. Leave it connected to the engine. Use a piece of fuel line that fits the outlet nipple and connect it. Now try and blow back through the pump. You should not be able to. If you can, rebuild/replace the pump.

The fuel/oil mix is 50:1.

Hey, I did what you said, and rebuilt/resealed the carbs. I did a test run, and she seems to purr like a kitten. I will take it to the lake as soon as possible, thanks for the info!
