I recently purchased a used 98 johnson 25, and its runs great, but when I open her up the engine suddenly dies, it starts back up immediately after killing. Its a three cylinder oil injection motor without electric start. Over time the problem got worse, and it started to kill more often. Now I can't go over mid throddle with out it killing. What is the problem? Is it the oil injection. My boat mechanic said that I have to rebuild the whole motor. How can I avoid paying over 1,500 dollars when I paid only 1,800 for the motor?

Check out fuel system for delivery problem.Pickup screen in tank, carb fixed jets for fuel deposits, fuel filter, leaks at fuel line disconnects. Most of these WOT lack of power problems are attributible to fuel restrictions due to gummy deposits which form in system when not in use.Removal and inspection of carb components are essential to determine. Not too hard a job if one is mechanically inclined.
