Problem with controls maybe?????

Hello everyone,

I'm having a problem starting my engine and I think it has something to do with the controls. First of all, my engine is a 1982 Mercury 50 HP Thunderbolt. The controls have one handle for forward neutral and reverse and one handle to raise the idle. I always have to raise the idle about half way to get it to start. The problem is that for some reason my motor won't turn over if I have the idle past 1 quarter. It will turn over fine with it down but as soon as I raise it up it just stops turning over. Not sure if its grabbing on something or what? I had it out a couple weeks ago and all was fine. Nothin more crappy than towing your boat all the way to the lake with a bunch of friends only to find that your gonna be beached all day!!! What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Jason

Inside the control is a systematic rats nest of wiring, wrapped carefully around the mechanics.

You may need to replace some of it. There should be a model number on the bottom of the control set. That's needed to order parts.

hope it helps

probably the neutral starter interrup. 2 wires from key switch to throttle/gear lever. check those first. Can't remember color but I think either green or yellow. This stops engine from starting if it isn't in neutral.

I'll check those wires out and see what I can find. Does anyone have a tutorial on how to turn up the idle on these motors? I"ve worked on bikes and snowmobiles but never boats. Everything looks very different.

Buddy I know how you feel. I have worked on motorcycles for years. I got a boat with a 65hp Mercury and I'm lost. Bikes are much easier to work on. Good luck.
