I just replaced my gimbal bearing and u-joint bellows. All went well until the exhaust bellows on the out drive (stern) end. I just could not get the clamp to hold. I finally thought I had it and replaced the out drive, filled with oil. When I trimmed the sterndrive up the bellows came loose again. Any ideas on how to easily fix? Also, do I really need to connect the Bellows? What would happen if I just did not attach? Again its a 2000 5.0 EFI with an Alpha I gen II.

thanks, Mike

Did you use the bellows adhesive? and believe the clamps need to face a certain way also. Yes you do need the bellows, I will try to find the link for your drive. It might take a minute, learning how to use this thing.

Did you follow the instructions in the OEM service manual. I never have problems when I follow it.

Re: Problem with Exhaust bellows Alpha I Gen II

I did not have an alingment tool and I was a little intimidated by the instructions in the manual, so a Merc mechanic gave me some help. We had trouble getting the bellows to hold. We did use bellows adhesive. The mechanic told me I really didn't need the bellows on the exhaust - which leads to the post here. Is there a way to attach the exhaust bellows with removing the outdrive since all other work is done?

What about an Exhaust Tube? After some searching, seems like a reasonable and (?) easier solution.

I had the same problem with my exhaust bellow. I just would not stay put. Didn't really want to pull the drive again so I ordered an exhaust tube. Should arrive today.

Re: Problem with Exhaust bellows Alpha I Gen II

i could be outa line here. but, i understand exhust bellows to do one thing. that's to route the exhust + water mix from the transom shield to the drive where it goes thru the drive and out the center of the prop. from reading here, the new design exhust tube is ridged and just slips over the drive, a non tight seal where most (but not all) of the gases and water make it thru to exit out the prop. point is that it's not sealed. also when static in the water yer exhust bellow will be full of water anyways. it's the risers that are above water line that keep the water out. so, if that's the case, then exhust bellows would not be an absolute nessesity. without them, the exhust + water would just exit thru the transom shield and come out in front of the drive. which may not be good as it may aireate the water prior to the prop. but the the new style tube would cure that. from what i read here, it's pretty easy to install too........the tube seems like it'd be a viable option to me........ what ya'd have would be perhaps a little more exhust noise + maybe some exhust soot or slime on yer transom from the non sealed tube leak......

Are you sure you had both the bellows and the housing clean when you used the bellows adhesive? The only time I ever had them come off is if I didn't clean them right. Also make sure the clamp is located in the proper position

Could be that it was not clean Don, I might have relied on the expertise of the person who helped me a bit too much. However, we did get the gimbal bearing and u-joint bellows on.

After looking things over today during daylight hrs, it looks as though installing the exhaust tube should not be too difficult and that is the route I'm going to take. At the end of the season I may re-visit the issue.
