Problem with Johnson

First post on the forum but, I’ve got a 1993 Johnson 60hp no vro. I bought this engine in the fall and it ran but wouldn’t idle. Over the winter I rebuilt the carbs and started her up last week and she fired up first crank and it was running mint. After warming it up the water stoped coming out the tell tale hole. I dropped the lower unit and changed the impeller. I also changed the fuel pump in the meantime aswell. I go to start it doesn’t go. I pulled the carbs and there’s were dry. Which leads me to not getting gas to the carbs. The bulb doesn’t get hard but it would start on it before. If anyone has any advise or help. I would greatly appreciate it.

If.you have the 3 port conversion make sure the lines.are on correctly. Is the pulse limiter still on? What is compression? Have you done a spark.test?

q: why did you change the fuel pump if you were missing a tell tale ??

ok so no gas in the carbs….if you disconnect a dry carb fuel line do you see gas spurting out the hose when you pump manually ?? you should

both carb types have common inlet needles so they should fill up with the hand pump… did you do a blow test on the carbs before reinstalling them ??

How was he missing a telltale? He said it stopped while it was running.

Were you test running on a hose ?----Do that compression test first.

So I changed the fuel pump because it was the original one and it was still idleing a bit ruff. And the compression is 110 on all 3. I disconnected fuel lines from carbs and gas wouldn’t even come through. But why not? Bulb won’t get hard but it was running on it a week ago? Could the primer solenoid have failed?

and to clarify I ran the motor on a garden hose on muffs and then I turned it off I turned on again after 3 min and no water coming out. So I changed the impeller and also the fuel pump to make sure no issues with that.

More than likely you have the fuel.lines.on wrong. Do you have a 3 port pump? is the pulse limiter still on? Did you buy the cheapest.pump possible?

I’ve got the top brass one going to the carb distributor line. The bottom brass one going to the crankcase/motor and the top middle plastic one coming from gas tank and filter. And the filter is new too. Yes three port pump but I’m not sure what a pulse limiter is. The pump is from amazon but it wasn’t the cheapest

There should be arrows on the brass nipples. The arrow out is fuel, the arrow in is the pulse line. If the pulse line comes out of where the VRO was if it has a blue nipple that needs to be drilled out

must be semantics… I kind of read that as a consequence of loosing the teltale the fuel pump was changed along with the impeller ho well….did not catch.." in the mean time"

Do the simple checks first.
Did you reverse the gas line?
Does primer bulb pull fuel from tank?

Then the common denominator is the fuel pump. Wrong one or not installed correctly.

If the new filter is an inline model, is it on backwards? Arrow should point direction of fuel flow.

Turns out it was a VRO and they guy I bought it from had converted. The pump I had was wrong since it had the whole at the back wich made the pump work, I rebuilt the old one and now she’s running again. Thanks for your help
