I have a problem with my rpms tachometer on my boat and wondering if anyone can advise on what the problem could be.

The problem that I been having with it on the last couple of times out, is that its having a much higher rpm reading that the motor is actually doing at that given time, and I say this because it is impossible for me to be doing the king of rpm that is reading at the speed that I'm going, for example, when I have the accelarating lever half way up, normally it would be reading between 3000-3500rpms, now having the lever on the same position it reads past 7000-rpms, also at the moment when its acting up like that, when you touch the gauge/tach its very hot. I check all the connections and there isn't any loose or broken cables also I spoke to a mechanic about it and he asked me if the rectifier was working fine, I checked it and it seems to be working fine, it's charging the batteries properly.

Any ideas from anyone on what the problem could be or if its sounds like its actually one of the symptoms that you would get when the tachometer is broken.

Any advise on this headache is very much appreciated.

I would quess that something has shorted out inside the tach.

To my knowledge those things are sealed at the factory and cant be repaired.

Toss in the trash, And buy a new one.

Good Luck!

Re: Problem with tachometer

Hey roger.
I believe Goodoleboy is right, that some thing inside the tach is wrong, unless the adjusting device on the backside on the tach, hase shaked to another position ???? But I dont know what kind of motor and tach you are talking about.
You see...most tach can be adjusted on the backside (diff. pole or cyl.)And inside the tach are there a coil with diff. output according to the adjustment on the backside.

Look at the back of the tachometer. There should be a dial there which should be set to number six (6). Let us know what you find.
