problem number 1- bought a boat that needed a trailer- solved today

problem #2- boat cutting out on maiden voyage- changed plugs, problem solved

problem #3- wired burned on the manifold, rerouted, respliced, problem solved

NEW problem #4- took it out and after 10 minutes driving at variuos speeds, began to smell smoke, pulled up the hatch and noticed driver side maifold at top where the large clamps hold on, was smoking, that side was much hotter than the passenger side at same location. boat temp looked to be around 175-180 at all times after warm up.

so now what do i do!!!!

problem #5 brake lights work but no turn signal on either side, do i need a different type bulb, it only has single bulb in back with a smaller bulb going out to the side

3 trips out and so far not a single successful trip

#4 sounds like you could have a bad riser which is not cooling the exhaust on that side.

#5 do you have tail lights and brake lights? Trailer turn signals are just the brake light bulbs. You may need and adapter to convert your vehicles lighting over to the trailers.

So, what are we working on here? Make, Model, Year.

You can put new risers on old plugged manifolds and have the same problems.
Of course, if the raw water pump is bad, all new manifolds and risers in the world won't help.,

#5; what style is the connector at the tongue? Flat 4? You can test the car end with a test light; white ground, brown running, green right brake/sig, yellow left brake/sig.

If car end is ok, you have a problem in the trailer. Check the ground connections first.

When was the last time the impeller was replaced. Those Gen II drives need a new one every 3 to 4 years ya know. Since you smoked the hoses coming out of the risers, you probably need new hoses.
Go to "http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/PartsExpress/HomePage/homepage.asp and use your engine serial number to find parts (and oem prices) for your engine and drive.

You can also download free OEM service manuals at http://www-alt.mercurymarine.com/mnetdata/sisdata/srvcovr.pdf
You need manual 24 for your engine and 14 for your drive.

I suppose a "sticky" would be in order for anyone buying a used boat.

Unless the seller can PROVE that the raw water pump was replaced either require them to replace it before you buy or just replace it as the first thing you before you put it in the water!

I bought my 1997 454/Bravo III from a guy that swore up and down that he replaced the raw water pump that year!

When I took it apart I found a severely worn out impeller, a partially melted housing (from running it dry), and crammed up into the oil cooler, the remnants of the previous raw water pump failure!!

Use your own best judgment!

Cheers,

Rick

Ayuh,........

Problem #2 leads Me to believe that the motor needs a Full,+ Complete Tune Up,+ Service..........

Problems #3,+ #4 both lead to a Bad Impeller......
The Manifolds should Never get Hot enough to burn a Wire,.... Touching or Not.....
And,........
Any time a boat experiences an Over Heat condition,......
The Impeller, in Raw Water Pump is the 1st place to be Looking..........

There is just one pump, and it's in the outdrive. But, water follows the path of least resistance, if the flow from the pump is weak it will only flow thru one manifold if the other is a little more plugged up.
Have you looked at the manuals?
