Please help, I just put on another 85hp outboard. the cables move freely when not connected and the shifter moves without cables. but when it is all connected I cannot get it to move freely into forward or reverse.
I replaced the lower unit before installing this motor.

Re: Problems shifting in forward and reverse

Do you have a manual? It is relatively long to explain, but if the lower unit is not adjusted properly OR if the neutral rpm limiter is not adjusted properly, it will bind up and shifting will be very difficult. Under the bottom carb you will see where the shift rod goes down. Near the bottom of the linkage tower you will see the neutral rev limiter--a slightly angular flat plateon the throttle advance and idle stop casting. Right behind it there is a plate that it contacts only in neutral. This plate is connected by two screws to the shift rod. If out of adjustment, the rev cam and plate will drag on each other when you try to shift. Also, be sure that the screws that hold the cable clamps are not too long. If they protrude through the clamp, they will rub and bind.

Re: Problems shifting in forward and reverse

hi, have a 78 105 magnapower on a boat i am restoring. same thing mine is doing, but only when the engine is warm. i can see where the cables are catching up to each other and the clips are riding along together then won't let the other pass by. i tried to put the new cables on exactly where the others were (thread count) but obviously they are a hair off. what is the best method to adjust?? i filed the bottom of the top clip[ just a smidge and it helped to avoid total stoppage but still binds a bit then lets go. it starts right up and idles fine (without having to put in neutral advanced when cold) and if doesn't catch shifts perfect. thanks !!!
