I am looking at a 1987 Mirage with a 4.3L 205 HP Merc I/O. The owner had the engine repaired due to water in the oil (assuming a cracked block). He has paperwork on where and what was done.

Any cautions about a situation like this. Does this problem mean the engine has not been taken care of or abused?

It doesn't always mean cracked block ,could have been cracked exhaust manifold leaking water into the exhaust valves down the piston to oil.
Or blown head gasket or has it been overheated and warped heads leaky head gaskets.
what kind of hrs on the boat? does he have maitenace records?
If not I'd stay away from it,unless he gonna give you a warranty.

Rich

I would ask him to let you talk to the mechanic who did the work. I would also get your own marine (as in marine ((emphasis marine))) mechanic to give it a going over and water test before I went further.

Having just been rebuilt is not necessarily bad if the work was done right and fixed the cause of the original problem.

He has paperwork and info on where the work was done and that's a good point for me to have some one look at it.
