My 91 Johnson 60HP tiller is having problems starting. Replaced the starting battery and it cranks with plenty of power...but it has issues starting every 4th or 5th time. It usually starts cold and most of the time warm it starts. But every 4th or 5th time it won't start. It cranks with plenty of power, the battery is full charge. It's like something isn't engaging and it won't start. Once it does start it idles with the best of the 4-strokes and runs perfect.

What is the most likely cause of this? The Starter motor? Please help...I was towed off the lake twice this weekend. Thanks.

Did Johnson make 4 strokes in 1991?

Tom,

When you have this problem, is the starter actually sninning/engaging?

Im just saying it runs great when it actually starts, (like todays 4-strokes).

It's a 3 cylinder if that helps.

YES, the starter seems to enagage, and the flywheel on top seems to move pretty fast.
