I have a 96 5.7 with the mercarb. well i cannot get the choke working correctly. it wont close unless you turn the adjustment 180 deg. to where he arrow is pointing down and then it will not open. is there anyway to rig up a cable and just make it a manual choke? or is there anyone with the same problem or with a fix???

Have you had the plastic cover off? The spring may be on the wrong side of the tab or it could be all rusted up.
Is this electric choke?

If it was working before it sounds like you have it on the wrong side.
Do you have a manual for your engine?

Exactly my thought. The little 90 degree bent tab on the coil spring has to be returned in position so it is catching the cam that opens and closes the choke plate. Typically you have to turn it a little so there is already tension on it when reassembling it. If you just look at how it operates and goof around with it, you'll see how it works. It can be confusing to reinstall.

Also, you can bench test those chokes by applying 12 vdc and watching the coil spring expand and contract.

Looking at the Merc manual it looks like its a little different setup than i was thinking.
Go to the Adults only thread at the top of this section and get manual #3...it shows the choke diagrams and adjustments in the fuel section.

Gary, I was looking too for him and thought manual #17 since it's a 1996. That manual says it has an electric choke, but the exploded view looks like vacuum piston type:confused:

My earlier advice was for the straight electric choke (which I have), but now I think I probably just confused Fishinman...sorry Fishingman.

Fishingman...post up your serial numbers engine and carb if you have them.

Your correct Ron...I told him the wrong year on the manual.I missed the 1996 on his post..
If its a 2 bbl Merc carb it should not be that difficult.

Maybe we scared him off...

Well, let's hope we didn't scare him off... Because you're right. No matter which carb he has they're both pretty easy to fix if you know which one it is:rolleyes:

Have you tested to see if you are getting 12 volts to it?

Alright, if it's a coil choke, you can remove the cover that houses the coil. Turn your key to the on position and watch the coil...it should expand or contract (don't remember which, but you can see it do it). If it's moving, it's working. If it's not, use a multimeter and see if you have voltage going to it. Purple wire is hot (+), black wire is ground (-). If you're not satisfied, remove it and do it on the bench with an extra 12 vdc battery. Once it's moving, if it is, you will be able to see how it moves the cam and opens the choke plate.
