I mainly use mono line but recently tried out some fluorocarbon and i had a real hard time with the knots holding. is this normal? is there a good knot that i should be using for fluorocarbon line? I forget what the knot is called that i use but its named after one of the line manufacturers like trilene or berkley knot or something. It's a good knot when i use mono...

any thoughts? thanks

no it wasn't. i forget what brand it was but i remember it said on the package 100% fluorocarbon. the one i have now is stren fluorcarbon coated, and its a little better than the last one but still nothing great in my opinion.

when tying my hooks, jig heads , lures, whatever to mono or fluro i will normally use te trilene knot. Thats about the easiest knot to tie and it holds. Although when tying the fluro spit on the knot first it will help. Although i will tell you that when fishing with flurocarbon you must re tie your setups every 2 or 3 fish. When fishing for walleye or anthing with teeth you must re tie every 2 fish. Fluro works great but it frays easily . Good luck.

What type of fluorocarbon are you using that has ?fraying? issues? Locally, we use a lot fluorocarbon leaders because of its superb resistance to abrasion.

Must agree with this. I use fluoro for leaders for the sharp-toothed critters or when bouncing lures off rocks and jetties for that very reason.

Fluoro is stiffer and less supple than nylon mono, and can cause backlash in a casting reel if you're not careful (and can afford to fill a whole spool with it).

Like already mentioned you need to wet the knot before synching it up. Fluoro heats up when tying so the moisture keeps it cool.

I use a simple Blood knot for 10 Lb fluoro to 15 Lb mono. Never had a failure, but be sure to wet both sides before pulling tight.

Fluoro to mono or any kind of backing I tie a back to back uni and have never had a failure. Termination knots are either palomar or trilene. If your fluorocarbon is fraying it sounds like you have a bad batch. I've run just plain cheap fluoroclear (fluoro coated) Pline for a few years with great results and great knots. I know it's not the end all-be all of fluoro but i've never noticed a difference in my catch.

Re: problems with flourocarbon knots?

well I have been using the fluorocarbon coated stuff now for a few weeks and it seems to be holding the knot good. I have seen some fraying on the line tho and i should probably change it out (I don't know if the mono would look worse or not if i had it on...). I haven't really noticed anything special about the fluorocarbon stuff tho. The first stuff that i had was 100% fluorocarbon (like i said before) and i had a few knots slip thru with hardly any tension which made me REAL skeptical... enough that i changed the line. I believe the trilene knot is what it's called that i use. it normally lets loose on a good pull when i get a lure stuck but never had any problems landing a fish while using it.

I dunno, I will prolly just stick to the regular mono

I use fluorocarbon line and tie the Palomar knot. Never had a problem. When tying and the knot is still loose, place it in your mouth to wet it good, then pull it tight. That reduces friction which may heat up the line and weaken it. I was out with a bass pro guide several weeks ago and he was using mono and the improved clinch knot. Once any knot is tied you must jerk on your line several times to be sure the line is solid. I always do this and once I had the line snap. If your knot comes loose you should see a curly end at the tag end. If the line breaks the tag end should be straight. Both knot video instructions can be found by Google.
