I just mounted my 48hp outboard on my 16' runabout. When I give it some power, water splashes almost straight up the sides of the motor and eventually right in over the top of the transom. Please help. Do I adjust the angle of the motor? if so, away from the boat or torwards the boat? Do I have the wrong engine for the boat (it IS NOT a short shaft)? If I do have the wrong engine can I build the transom up to correct the problem?

Jaya I think that you have just solved the problem. If the lower leg is in the water too deep it will cause just what you discribed, it will also cause the boat to react very quickly in turns, because of the extra rudder sticking down.

Yes you can build up the transom to accommodate the engine. The cavitation plate should be even with the bottom of the boat. That's the plate that is just above the torpedo, or gear case.

You can install a "jack plate" to raise the motor. I've got one that gives the additional benefit of turning a standard mount motor into one with tilt & trim. Pretty nice rig.
