Problems with power Trim

I have a 50hp Mercury OB with power trim. The power trim will trim the motor up with no problems, but when I push the button to go down the power trim does not go down. Once it started to go down then stopped. I put it in full trim to check the oil level and it seems to be full, oil comes out of the plug when I removed the plug. Power if fully charged, but does not react when switch is used on the motor housing or on the throttle. Not sure what to look a next or try next.

Re: Problems with power Trim

Need the year. Check for voltage on the small wire on the down solenoid while someone holds the button for down. Check for voltage, one large terminal on solenoid should have power. If you have power on small wire jump across the 2 large terminals on solenoid to see if engine goes down. If it does it's a bad solenoid.
If no power to small wire check switch and wire.

Check for two relay swiches, will look like 2 boxes if there is change them around see if works. then can see which one is bad. Had this happen to my 40 horse Mariner.

Re: Problems with power Trim

hot wire the motor directly to a 12v battery.
If the system works in both directions then you have a bad relay, switch, or fuse.

If the motor spins but the system still doesn't go down properly then your pump needs rebuilding.

50HP Mercury trim usually has hydraulic failure around 15 years. More or less years depending upon hours of use. The source cause of the failure is water clinging to the piston shaft when you lower the engine. It sinks to the lowest point in the system and causes the seals to harden during storage along with rust on the springs and valves. It is not a serious problem if you have it and the repair bill should be around $300 or less.

Re: Problems with power Trim

The motor is a `'99Merc with less than 50 hours on it. I bought the boat from a old timer that only had it on the lake 2 times in 10 years. Ok so I hot wired the power trim and it goes down fine was not able to figure out how to hot wire it to go up. I tracked the wiring down and found two black boxes that I think are the relays I pulled both and are going to take them to the part store and try to replace them.
