Procedure for spark testing

I have done a search looking for "testing for spark" etc, but cant find answers to my questions. I don't want the motor to start while testing correct? How do I keep it from possibly starting? Or do I hook up water muffs just in case? Do I pull all wires from plugs and then check 1 wire at a time with others disconnected? Should I have fuel supply hooked up to provide cyclinder lubrication? Could someone tell me the correct procedure. I have a spark tester. Thank you.

Remove plug wires and ground to engine block. Check spark one cylinder at a time. You're only going to hit the starter for a second or two to check for spark. If you're concerned, spray a little fogging oil in the cylinders between checks. If motor is only two cylinders, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Thank you. Spark test has been completed and all 4 cylinders sparked good. I did have another problem though which I started another post on.

Spark test should always be done with all of the plugs removed; the test is for the ignition system and needs to be done at maximum RPM that the starter can produce. Any sparkplug wires not connected to the test device should be grounded to protect the powerpack.

You should have a device capable of at least a 3/8" gap and the resulting spark should be a sharp, blue snap.

Rope start motors will produce over a smaller gap.

You can make a tester with nails and a board, or purchase one as good as this CDI unit sold here at iboats.
