Proctecting OB in freezing conditions

My buddy would like to use his 25HP Suzuki in MN next week.<br /><br />It's possible that night time temps (days too) could drop below freezing.<br /><br />Since it is not practical to pull it off to drain, what is the best to protect it?<br /><br />Thanks

Take the motor off and store it inside?<br /><br />After pulling the boat, I would raise/lower the motor at least 8-10 times and then finally leave it in the down position. <br />If you are really concerned, you could flush the motor via. lower unit muffs with some pink RV antifreeze or even windshield washer fluid (winter type). Then store in the down position.<br /><br />There are 2 types of pink RV antifreeze. 1 has additives to protect engines and the other does not. Check the label. Both are environmently safe.<br /><br />Dave

marty_scher,<br /><br />As long as it is stored (moored) with the engine vertical and the impeller/housing is under water, it will be fine. Do not leave it tilted up.<br /><br />I've done it many times.

marty, there is no problem in cold weather boating except ice all over the deck from dragging wet fish into the boat. The motor is self draining while in the upright position when off the boat.When down in the water it can freeze in position with no damage as long as it is only an inch or so thick. The pump is far enough down in the water so it is not a solid block of ice. Make sure when trailering the motor is in the down position. The remaining water in the pump will freeze solid. A couple of pulls [not starting it]before trailering will clear it. Last winter I fished a dozen times with air temps in the teens. Not for the faint of heart. nevjb
