art3_1.jpgIncreased gas prices seem to be threatening our boating fun, but we don't need to throw out the anchor just yet. Several of the ways for your boat to cruise more efficiently and save on fuel include: making sure the hull is clean, having a well-tuned engine and using properly sized trim tabs.

Properly sized and correct use of trim tabs can save you up to 30% on fuel costs, depending on the size and usage of your boat.

The only thing better than a performance-enhancing trim tab system is one that runs itself! A system such as the Bennett Auto Tab Control(ATC) automatically adjusts your trim tabs to changing weather, water and load conditions. It helps maintains the optimum running attitude through it all. That translates to even greater fuel efficiency and the most comfortable ride you can have on your boat. The Bennett ATC system calculates more than a thousand attitude readings per second so it will make all the corrections you wouldn't take the time to make manually.

The ATC is most effective for cruising at a constant speed over long distances. If your passengers move about the boat, causing a list, the ATC will move the tabs and correct the list. It is programmed not to activate during sharp turns or over-correct in rough water or momentary weight shifts. If wind conditions create a bumpy ride, it will work to level out the boat, recreating the attitude setting you programmed. Any ATC is not as effective for "start/stop" boating where the boat operator should be in full control of the running attitude. In any condition requiring a bow-high attitude, the ATC should be turned off and the tabs fully retracted. ATC does not fully replace your manual control.

art3_2.jpgEverybody that owns a cruiser equipped with trim tabs goes through the constant adjustment of the trim tabs game, says decade-long boater and trim tab user Kevin Sanders of Seward Alaska, With kids onboard, at least every couple of minutes someone is moving around the boat. With the ATC unit, the game of having to constantly adjust the tabs has ended. Set it, forget about the tabs.

Other boaters online are sharing their experiences, such as:

Steve Gilbert, Regal boat owner from South Bend, Indiana states, It makes your boat enjoyable, not a task!

I installed the auto system and am very happy with it. I can enjoy boating instead of constantly fiddling with the tabs to maintain the perfect setting, says Four Winns owner Gary Marker, from Winter Haven, FL. Installation was straight forward and easily accomplished. As always, Bennett was very helpful in answering questions regarding functions, installation, and setup.

The Auto Tab Control works on a wide variety of boat sizes from 25 to 140

The ATC will make all the adjustments that are possible using the trim tabs on your boat. For example, if the trim tabs are too small to properly trim your vessel, the ATC will make all the adjustments it can, but it will be more effective if you have properly sized tabs. Another piece of trim tab knowledge: In addition to trim tab surface area, the amount of water flow under the tab affects lift. The slower the boat is moving, the less effect the tab will have on your running attitude. In the same way, the ATC will be more effective at higher, constant speeds.

So don't let the rising gas prices stop your fun on the water. Consider letting an ATC take over the trim tabs for a while so you can relax and enjoy the ride.
