I recently bought a Suzuki DT75 -88 (cheap), the motor had a scored piston (the upper one), the plan is to fix the motor and use it om my boat next summer.
I'm a newbee on boat motors, so I'm hoping you experts here can help me and guide me in the right direction!

I don't know the history of the motor, the only thing I know is that the seller said that the motor slowly stopped when driving it.
So I decided to buy the motor as it seems to be in a good shape, execpt for the scored piston which I assumed should be a piece of a cake to swap.......now I'm not so shure of this...?
I was quite near to give everything up as the powerhead was extremly difficult to loose, as five bolts holding it to the engine holder bracket was impossible to loose. Two snapped off and three came off with a lot of heating and luck! But after a days work I manage to get rock the powerhead of :))

After I pulled the head off I found one of the thermostat bolts (M6x40) down in the heads cooling channels.
The color near the no 1 sparkplug have also changed to light brown, which should indicate a hot cylinder/head.
There are also a tendency of brown color on the paint near no 2 plug.

What I'm trying to figure out first is the root cause, (dont want to fix the motor and have a scored piston again).

Can the bolt inside the head have this affect on the piston? The scoring is quite near the exhaust port and there is a big crater on top of the pistons crown.
(The plugs heating range is ok)

No 2 piston is also scored, but not much at all. Can I still use this piston?

All help are gratefully received.

sounds like it was over heat that got it IMO, and a loose bolt in the wrong place (cooling passage) could cause an over heat condition.

But the over heat alarm and and safe mode should have came in before it got that bad.
lean fuel/air mix can cause bad things to happen to pistons also.
Lack of oil will normally get bearings

I would replace both pistons

styleabu:
The no 1 cyl wall are not so bad but have some small scores at the top.
No 2 cyl wall almost nothing.
Thanx for offering a used powerhead, but I think the shipping cost would be pretty high overseas.

99yam40:
The seller had cut off the leader to the alarm buzzer!
I was also thinking of lean mixture, so I will check carbs and also rebuild the gas pump just to be on the safe side......

Anyway, in the next week I will fly over to San Diego to help with an installation that have gone wrong (for the company where I work.)
I have to order spares from Browns Point then, just 30% of the spare part cost here in Sweden.
Does Browns Point have a good reputation? Any problems with shipping in time?

Not sure about shipping times, may want to see if the stuff you want to order is in stock or has to be sent from the factory before you head that way
