I have a 1994 Ranger 482V with a 1994 150 merc XR6. I just bought this boat and it came with a aluminum 21p prop (guy was to cheap to get SS after it was stolen). I want to get a SS prop but am unsure what to purchase. With the current prop I am turning to many RPM's at WOT. I can hit 6000 with little trim. I am looking for some advice on what to run on this boat. Any of you prop experts have some advice for me? Thanks

Re: Prop Advice

First, are we on a jackplate? If not then what holes are we mounted in?
Will it go above 6000?

Re: Prop Advice

I am not running a jackplate. There are 5 hole option for mounting on this motor. It is mounted in the top holes. In other words there are 4 other holes below where it is mounted in case someone wanted to raise the motor. I did not want to push it past 6000 RPM because from what I have been reading, max WOT RPM should not exceed that. I also loose grip when cornering. I am looking for increased performance in speed, grip and bow lift. One guy told me to run a 23p tempest plus SS. Does that sound like a good option?

Thanks

Yes, it "could" be a good option...but I'd raise the engine to the third set of holes to begin with because thats where it "should" run best based on my experience with the Rangers with no plate.
Ranger is nose heavy with minimal built-in bow lift so it's going to take a high-rake prop like a Tempest, or what I'd use-a Turbo Lightning-to keep the bow up where it should be.
Stay with 3 blades with no plate...I don't think you could get a 4-bld high enough to use what a 4 has to offer.
Either prop should do well as long as the pitch is right for the available rpm...which it would be best if we knew just what that was...it wouldn't hurt a single thing to run it up and see how high it will go-it may even have a limiter which is not to keep the engine together but to keep certain items "in-time".
The 21P alum will likely not run up height-wise anymore than it already is so don't expect anything from that. We "could" get real close if you'd run it at WOT just long enough to see what ya got before moving anything....we need a factual base-line to go from.

Re: Prop Advice

ok got it in the water tonight and ran it for awhile. Calm water, slight to no ripple. Running WOT it would sit at 6000 to 6100 with a little bit of trim. Speedo on the boat read 55-56. This is with little wieght in the boat. Me 190lbs, 1/2 tank of gas, and empty livewells. Is this enough to get an idea about performance?
